Facebook Contest Apps

Ever see a Facebook contest and wonder if its being done correctly? One of the most important things to know is you can’t run a contest on Facebook directly. It has to be done by a Facebook 3rd Application. Going against this goes against the terms and services directly. You can view the terms and services here.

Recently we have just developed a Facebook app for a contest at Aitken’s Pewter. We came up with the concept to try and get as many views on this video as possible. Doing this wasn’t simple but we thought by creating a Facebook comment stream that had to be used to be entered was smart. Why? Simple. With this app, after someone uses the comment stream it posts on the stream as well on the persons Facebook wall with a link back to Aitkens Pewters contest page. So really, people are sharing it on their walls without even realizing it.

If you read this blog you know we’re big on Social Media and coming up with interesting ways to stir a buzz. Get in touch with us if your a business owner who wants to take their social media presence to the next level!

Google Unveils Project Glass; Is This The Future of How We See?

By now we shouldn’t really be surprised when Google unveils some incredible new product or service with all kinds of promise. Google is known for thinking up big ideas but not so much on following through on them, or having them actually take off. Google Buzz or more recently Google +. Ok maybe Google+ still has a chance. But I digress, Google’s latest unveiled project, dubbed Project Glass, is worth getting very excited about.

Like the name may suggest, Project Glass is Google’s concept for a set of augmented reality eye glasses that people would wear at all times. Rather than try to explain it, watch this video which does a great job of showing exactly how Google imagining it working: Project Glass Debut Video Demostration

Pretty cool right? With smartphones and tablets the lines between our real lives and our internet lives are getting more and more blurred, and it looks like Google wants to take it one step further. Google says it’s already started testing such devices running a system based off their Android platform for the heads up display. It raises a lot of questions too. Will it actually be that quick? We all see how smartphones and other devices are actually supposed to work in commercials and demo videos but its sometimes a different experience when it’s actually in our hands (or in this case, on our face). Do we actually want  this level of integration between our social media/cell phone/internet and real life? Are we a few years away from looking like Robocop?

Apparently Google plans to have these out this year. Whether or not that is realistic deadline is up to debate I suppose until they show us the goods. But one thing that video conveniently leaves out, which could be its biggest hurdle, is what these things will actually look like. Let’s take a look shall we?

Yikes. I applaud them for doing the best they could with it but even these 20 something models couldn’t make these not like nerdy as all get out. Not that there isn’t a market for that too! Gizmodo makes a good point. Maybe Google should have released promo shots showing off a comparison like this:

In all honestly it’s probably not anywhere near as bad as it could be. We’ve come along way from gigantic headgear for virtual reality headsets. This will still be a tough sell for a lot of people I imagine, and a price hasn’t even been mentioned. Augmented reality social media integration can’t be cheap!

What do you think? Do you like the idea of Augmented Reality, all the time? Would you buy a pair? Why? Why not? If not, is it the never ending integration, or the way you’d look when sporting them that drives you away? According to Google “We’re sharing this information now because we want to start a conversation and learn from your valuable input,” so the most important thing is that you let them know what you think!

Facebook Timelines for Businesses

When Facebook introduced it’s new Timeline design it was met with a lot of groans from the general public, mainly because any tinkering done with their design has gotten Facebook some complaints anyway. And it’s not usually over any sort of displeasure over the changes themselves, more so just because there was any kind of change at all. People get comfy with the way Facebook (or any site) looks and operates and anything that disrupts that is approached with caution. Which is fair enough! But I think the new Timeline feature has been a huge improvement on personal profiles, and I think it will be an even bigger boost for businesses.

First off, here is a link to a good video to explain some of the benefits of the Timeline design, and the way some companies have developed apps to make the user experience even more social than before : Facebook Timeline for Businesses

One of my favorite things about the new Timeline design is big space they’ve given you for a cover photo. This is a great place to use your logo, photos of your office space, the front of your building, your team, or any other great ways to highlight what makes your business special.

Facebook also implemented a new admin panel that includes notifications, messages, insights. Under notifications, you can respond to people who send a message and view your latest insights. Insights help you to analyze preferences of your fans meaning that when you start a Facebook advertising campaign, it’s easier than ever to analyze how your fans are reacting.

This image is marked up with lots of great pointers to consider when building your businesses timeline page.

The image to the right features some great things to consider when building a Timeline page for your business, and was taken from an article posted here. The advice isn’t bad but every person needs to evaluate what they want to have on their Facebook page on their own. Read, evaluate, and then implement what you like.

With our iCMS tools, we allow you to makes changes and updates to your Facebook page directly from the same place you’re already updating your website from. This makes it a quick and easy process for one stop refreshing of your web content. It’s all easily accessible from your control panel and we’d be happy to help you integrate this feature with us.

What do you think of the new timeline design? Better, worse? Have you taken advantage of our Facebook page updating tools in the CMS? Be sure to leave comments and any questions!

If you haven’t heard Lindsay Lohan has come out of her tunnel and back in the spotlight, Here is a piece from Mashable.

Lindsay Lohan’s return to Saturday Night Live last night has turned viral, with many fans and detractors taking to social media sites to discuss the highs and lows of the pop starlet’s performance.

On Sunday afternoon, “SNL Lindsay Lohan” was the second most-searched term on Google and the sketch “The Real Housewives of Disney” was trending nationwide on Twitter.

Lohan’s poke-fun-at-herself monologue, which featured various SNL cast members questioning whether or not the star would be able to handle hosting duties in light of her recently-troubled past, was among the most discussed topics of the night. Cast members Kenan Thompson pretended to check her eyes for clarity and Kristen Wiig patted her down.

Does your company have a Facebook Page or a Facebook Profile?

It’s common and we see it all the time. Companies are on Facebook and they are set up as a person and not as a Facebook Fanpage. One thing people need to know before even reading more of this blog is this: Make the switch! You’re in violation of Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities! A lot of businesses are not aware of this, or are set up this way in hopes to get more eyes on their profile. The truth is they will be quite sad when Facebook deletes their profile without warning and they lose all of their content, photos, and yes even Facebook friends. That’s the down low. Read more…
